Dr. Christopher Kaufman is an accomplished composer of classical music who has specialized in the teaching of young people for over 25 years. He is also an author, presenter and performer. In his The Musical Forest, Dr. Kaufman combines all of this into one work. Through this work, Dr. Kaufman exemplifies hundreds of years of experimentation into the development of the ‘complete human intelligence’ of young people through the artist model.
Music fundamentals and the benefits of music education are taught via storytelling (a book filled with illustrative art), a work of original symphonic music with voice acting and narration (audio album), and entertaining participatory Teaching Videos.
The book/system is organized in 5 episodes. In each episode, the main character learns music words and experiences music adventure games with ‘teacher friends’ where she earns ‘seed pods’ for the music fundamentals Rhythm, Melody, Harmony and The Families of Instruments. She then fulfills the overall quest by bringing the pods to the Mysterious Cave of Dr. Soundartus and making music on his Magic Music Wall.
Students read along as the episode is played (episodes vary from 5 to 10 minutes in length). The teacher leads follow-on discussion. The participatory teaching video follows, in which characters from the story lead ‘tests’ on the episodes.
On the home website, Dr. Kaufman offers suggestions and descriptions and is available for consultation. Dr. Kaufman encourages teachers and classes to participate with the site such that classes may communicate with each other. New developments and local live performances are communicated to all participants.
